Best Gifts for Musical Kids

It's shopping season, and nothing feels better than finding the perfect gift for the musical child in your life. Read on for my top gift ideas to inspire your child to continue their journey of musical exploration.

Concert Tickets

Hearing your own instrument played live is one of the most powerful forms of motivation. Toronto has a vibrant music scene and you can easily find wonderful concerts to enjoy as a family. In particular, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra also has a wonderful concert series geared toward young people. You can search for TSO concert dates here.

Musical Books

I love gifting books, and there are so many beautiful musical books to choose from. "Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin" by Lloyd Mass is a personal favourite because it introduces all the instruments of the orchestra. You can find more book ideas in our post, "Best Musical Picture Books".

Music Accessories

This wouldn't be a proper gift guide without suggesting that a music stand, metronome, or music bag make great gifts. Another perfect stocking stuffer is a nice fresh rosin. I like Hill dark rosin, and it looks gift-worthy in its fancy little green bag. You can find these accessories and other gift ideas at The Sound Post (93 Grenville Street).

Musical Playing Cards:

There are a ton of awesome musical games out there, but you'll get the most mileage out of this deck of playing cards, which use a different musical era for each suit (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic). Each suit contains 13 composers with fun facts and details of their contribution to classical music. You can purchase these here from Amazon.

Fancy Headphones

If your family struggles to do their listening for their Suzuki music lessons, this is a great solution. Available from Pottery Barn in two stylish colours, this will motivate any tween to snuggle up with their repertoire book and check their daily listening off the to-do list. You may also want to check out this pair of equally trendy animal headphones.

Classical Music Albums

Whether through a CD or just a download, gifting high-quality music is as easy a purchase as it is inspirational. If you prefer something more modern, The Piano Guys or Black Violin may be right up your alley. If you're looking for more traditional classical music, The Sound Post has put together this comprehensive gift guide of classical albums that will help you find something for any age.

I hope this list helps you to buy meaningful gifts this year! Have a wonderful holiday season.

Rebecca Lane is the director, founder, and owner of Upper Beaches Music School. She teaches at the school on Saturdays, but most days you can find her chasing after her three young children, one of whom is in the Suzuki violin program at UBMS.
