Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel is a German opera composed by the 19th century composer Engelbert Humperdinck. Engelbert's sister, Adelheid Wette, wrote the libretto (words) and based it on the Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.

Hansel and Gretel are send to the forest by their mother to look for strawberries. The come upon a gingerbread house owned by a witch who locks them up. She plans to fatten them up to eat them. Hansel and Gretel manage to outwit her and rescue themselves along with all the other children the witch has turned into gingerbread.

Sibling Rivalry

Here are Lisette Oropesa and Tara Erraught singing a duet as Hansel and Gretel in the Metropolitan Opera's version of the opera. Did you notice they're singing in English?

A trip to the opera!

Here is the whole opera, with English subtitles! Thank you to the Wiener Philharmoniker for putting this movie together. In the interest of wiggly children who may not want to sit for 1 hour and 40 minutes, divide it up into Acts and watch one at a time!

Snacktime!

When I hear "Hansel and Gretel", I see gingerbread houses dancing in my head. Time for family baking time! These cookies are simple enough that you probably have all the ingredients in your pantry already. They would make a great snack while watching the opera!
